ruthlessly and unjustly stealing and devouring the lands of poor farmers.

He dont make Billy out to be a murderous villain, he sings the story the only way it can be portrayed. And although there is no verifiable proof that the kid killed the 21 people the legends claim there is sufficient evidence that his kill count was higher than 2. Additionally, James is still regarded as a hero to many sons of the South. The offenses he committed against the railroad are often not looked at as crimes, rather they are seen as efforts against an evil institution that was

    @NCCountryBoy20 That’s actually a myth.

  • NCCountryBoy20  On January 28, 2012 at 12:28 am

@TheBookWorm1718 he actually killed 21 and pat garrett would have been number 22 but garrett killed him first

@2eyejoe2 In Billy the Kid’s time it was perfectly legal to shoot horse thieves on sight without even a trial; so how is him shooting two men in self defense so much more cold blooded murder than legally executing somebody who stole a horse?

  • 2eyejoe2  On January 28, 2012 at 1:44 am

@TheBookWorm1718 I,m almost 50 and i have never killed anyone. Billy the kid you say killed only two, that makes him a cold blooded killer.

  • TheBookWorm1718  On January 28, 2012 at 2:23 am

@tecate1joe If I remember correctly, he killed 4 people, the first two were in self defense, but he was in jail for them anyway, and broke out during which time he killed I think it was 2 guards. And he was 16 the first time. Agree though, great song.

@TheBookWorm1718 If I remember correctly, William H. Bonnie killed 12 people, the first one being someone who insulted his mother. He was aged 13 at that time, if I’m correct. Anyhow, great song.

@TheBookWorm1718 I don’t think this song pictures Billy as “a murderer who really deserves to die”. To me it’s more about a kid, driven by circumstances to being hunted… Doing what he had to and ending up an outlaw. More sympathy and regret, than accusations.

@jeremyquas ….Yes he did. Words and Music. I did not know Chris recorded it. I will check it out.

  • jeremyquas  On January 28, 2012 at 4:36 am

Chris Ledoux sang this song years later I liked that version as well. Did Charlie write this?

  • 30millioncrabs  On January 28, 2012 at 5:30 am

@TheBookWorm1718 You are WAY overthinking this. It’s CDB, Charlie gives NOT a damn about P.C. Or historically correct! He wrote a song about an American Legend, leave it at that. Why does EVERYTHING have to make sense? Are we SO wrong to just let loose and be free to dream?????? Shut off the CNN and read a book by Louie Le’Mour, and have a drink. Get LAID, bookworm. But I COULD BE WRONG, I seriously doubt it!!!!

  • TheBookWorm1718  On January 28, 2012 at 6:31 am

@moe1871994 And in comparison, Billy the Kid only ever killed two people in his whole life, and that was self defense. So why’s he made out to be such a cold blooded killer? That’s what I don’t get.

  • moe1871994  On January 28, 2012 at 6:47 am

@Riverbend1111 jessy james was a 19th century robbin hood. he might of killed peopl in cold blood but always for the greater good. he gave hop to the south after the war and helped alot of people out and kept them strong even though they lost the war

  • Riverbend1111  On January 28, 2012 at 7:05 am

@TheBookWorm1718 …The James gang benefited from the fact that the south had lost the civil war. They were viewed as heroes who were carrying on the fight by their fellow southerners. Billy didn’t have any thing like that. He was caught up in a range war.

  • TheBookWorm1718  On January 28, 2012 at 7:23 am

I like Charlie Daniels, he makes great music, but I never got that he did a song about Jesse James as a hero, when he’s supposed to have killed a lot of people in cold blood, but his song about Billy the Kid is just a murderer who really deserves to die when he only killed 2 people in his whole life. Doesn’t make sense to me, even if it is just music.

  • Riverbend1111  On January 28, 2012 at 7:49 am

@superspidercat Mostly. He has a second guitarist in the band, this allows them to play guitar harmonies with each other. But Charlie is the main soloist.

  • superspidercat  On January 28, 2012 at 7:57 am

Does charlie d do all the pickin in this song?….great licks! Thanks!

@qazws321 Google it or go to cowboy lyrics.com. Always check out several sites, they’re not always correct.

do anyone have tabs for this song?

  • boseffis  On January 28, 2012 at 9:35 am

haven’t heard this song since like 1998, when i was 14. i used to love this song, i’d listen to it over-and-over. since then i’ve basically listened to nothing other than the grateful dead. for some reason i decided to try to find this song and ‘indian man’. they are great songs. wow.
